After experiencing the split-second quickness of it in reality, I understand now that cyclist are still almost completely reliant on drivers looking out for cyclists before they open their doors.  There’s something to knowing that we’re not suffering alone that somehow makes a difficult experience less difficult, I think. The trail extends from Chicago to the western suburbs, reaching across three different counties (Cook, DuPage, and Kane). Make a day out of this one because not only is it 33.5 miles, but you’re going to want to stop and smell the roses — and millions of other flowers and plants, too. The bike path is only one mile in length, but it loops around 91 acres, so you can turn your daydreams into a reality for as long as you want (or at least until your boss starts getting suspicious). A new bridge spanning the channel now makes the trail a single, nearly 7-mile continuous path from the North Side to suburbs Lincolnwood and Skokie. I was pleasantly surprised, however, that it turned out to be a very nice trail.  I’d say it’s been the best day of the year, weather-wise!  I was mostly okay physically, but I’ve mostly given up bike commuting and riding in the city streets – after about 5 years of bike commuting year-round. With some bike tools and zip ties, we were able to repair it enough on the trail and at the hotel to make the journey home! It was about 3:30 pm on a weekday, and it was chilly, so maybe those factors had something to do with it. The trail was originally a dirt path often used for horseback riding; though it’s now paved, an unpaved equestrian pathway still parallels the main trail. That reminds me, thus far on the trip, I had accidentally eaten approximately five bugs and had seen one snake.  When I’m in that state, I have less energy to counter and quiet all of those “what ifs?”  What if this car that’s coming up behind me doesn’t see us?
